Xtorrent Public Beta 2

I’m pleased to announce that Xtorrent Public Beta 2 is now available for testing. Xtorrent is an advanced torrent client that aims to bring a friendly interface and powerful features to the world of BitTorrent.

The largest change in Beta 2 is an under-the-hood overhaul of the downloads pane. The only visible manifestation of this right now is that the folder structure of downloading torrents can now be browsed, much like in the search pane. This rearchitecting work was done to lay a foundation for future advanced features and facilitate future integration work between the search pane, downloads pane, and (as of yet unreleased) RSS module.

More visibly, the swarm column in the search view has been redesigned, and can now be expanded to reveal a breakdown of seeds and leeches information instead of a single aggregate swarm size value. Finally, the Xtorrent window will now accept drag and dropped .torrents, and even provides a slick informational overlay view.

I love Xtorrent, I really do. It’s my favorite bittorrent app to use. I just wish I could use it with oink.me.uk’s trackers.

Zach...

Awesome stuff, dude
Nw all I need is encryption so that I can use it with Rogers High Speed.

i really love the way xtorrent searches for torrents, and the way it shows the contents of a torrent – bloody beautiful. my first thoughts were “buy it” – but after using it a bit, i can see a couple of features it needs.

it all comes down to getting specific files from torrents – after i’ve found rolling stone’s 500 best songs ever, i need a filter box for the individual torrent to find what i want in the huge list. and then, when i ask to download that individual file, i don’t expect to download all the songs – all i want is that *one* file and a way of seeing that quickly.

get that happening, and the mac will finally have something better than utorrent :)

vasanthpsraj...

thanks for your good service

cyberdog...

Good product but no upload my ratio to my tracker ? Why ?

oskite...

Wow, great update. We’ve been waiting for some of this.

As for my suggestion, I’d like to be able to have individual progress bars for each file of the torrents in the expanded view. And of course being able to select a single file of the torrent would be nice. But I bet you knew that.

Keep it up – love the app. :)

Florian...

looks great and works, too.

Tomas...

Xtorrent has a few flaws, I’ve had a couple of crashes as it nears completion of very large torrents, and it would be nice to have some features (such as selectively downloading specific files in a torrent instead of the entire torrent at once). However, I have to say that this is THE BEST TORRENT APP I have ever used already. ANy improvements you add now are just pushing it further ahead of the competition.

It’s also one of those apps that fit so perfectly into that mac experience that it’s a pleasure to use them, Transmit, Appzapper, and Delicious Library also spring to mind. But Xtorrent pretty much bests them all in being completely intuitive, powerful and yet very easy on the eyes.

I can’t wait until it gets out of Beta just so I can give you some money for it.

Reinier...

When you start talking about slick overlays, you get my attention. I admire your talent for programming apps with great functionality and usability, but man – you’re a real artist when it comes to interface esthetics. I am going to try the latest Xt right away.

Jay...

Dude, this is awsome, I am big fan of your wares and happily pay for any of them as they are in fact the crim dela cra of whats ut there for search and filesharing. I only wish that you would make irc chat client with your magical touch and ease of use in the same vien as “conversation” which is well designed but is no longer updated by the author, which is a shame because it is superb, but simply does not run very well on Intel mac’s as your apps do, but your touch at something of this nature would be great, just as the guys who do Unison and Transmit, are awsome at what they put out. Please keep up the good work, and I look forward to your next creation.

Dave...

Can you now choose which folder the files are downloaded to? A Bittorrent client is pretty useless without it, unless you like to keep all your music, all your videos and everything else in one folder.

Ben...

Wow, good job. I updated to revision 16 last night, guess I’ll just have to update again!

Question, will Xtorrent feature in-built updating? Like, when a new version is released, it can be downloaded automatically… as a torrent? That’d be pretty fun.

Michipu...

Great Job,again!
Your software is great, as always.

This client rocks, it is the best at all.

Keep goodworking!

velayo...

The new version brings my web surfing to a crawl even after activating an upload speed limit. It seems to me that the upload limit is not working because everytime I check the uploads and add them up they sum up to my total upload bandwith. Otherwise, the interface is much faster and I have experience no crashes so far.

plink...

Has it still the peerID XT -> Xantorrent or has it changed now into something more unique? If it has changed, it would be fine to post the used peerID string (or mail it), so other client developers can adjust the peerID for the peer list display. Thanks.

my...

Sounds great but architecting is not a word. You can be an architect, but you cannot architect something. Rearchitecting is even less of a word. Redesigning, recreateing, redoing, recombobulating (funny sounding non word) or something else would be a better choice.

Zakk...

I downloaded the public beta. Its truly an amazing program im getting rid of bittorrent it sucks compares to this featuree loaded app.

Jay...

Can I use it at OiNK’s yet? If not, it’s still not good enough.

giampo...

it always quit unexpectely, after a random number of minutes (from 1 to 30 ..)
grrrrr….

Tompa...

Looks pretty

JAPPO...

I’m looking forward to a non-beta release (I have a weird hate towards beta’s.) In all honesty, most Mac bittorrent clients suck so far, hope this will be different.

Shawn...

Will the ability to create torrents be a possible feature in the near future? We need an Azureus killer!

Geir...

I´ve downloade Xtorrent on all my macs, and it works flawlessly as far as I can see ! The UI is so beautiful it nearly brings tears to my eyes = )

Thanks !

Ryan...

Bug Report: I was using Xtorrent to search for torrents. I left my computer to eat something and it fell asleep. When I woke my computer up and tried to search for more torrents the search function no longer worked. It would open the tabs for all my search engines, but each would be named “Untitled” and the throbber would just spin and spin and spin, no results ever came up. Restarting Xtorrent would not fix this. I had to restart my computer to regain search abilities. This doesn’t happen every single time the computer falls asleep, but it has happened more than once, and this seems to be what instigates it.

A similar bug happens if you are seeding and the computer falls alseep. I had three files seeding, the computer fell asleep and when I woke it up I could not get anything to seed. Restarting Xtorrent didn’t fix it, neither did restarting the computer. I had to completely uninstal Xtorrent (not just the .app file, but all the aplication support files as well).

For some reason, despite the fact that I have seven torrent search sites loaded into Xtorrent the “Search Results” tab only returns results from three of them, to get torrents from the other four torrent sites I have loaded I have to actually click into that tab.

Lastly a suggestion. I can expand folders to see the contents, but there is only a download button for the folder. There should be a way to download individual files within a folder, for example in case i have a whole album but two songs, i just want to download those two i’m missing. If there is already a way to do this and I just don’t know what it is, then it needs to be more intuitive.

Keep up the good work!

Ryan

indraunt...

v18 is frightfully unstable… Please make v17 available again until the bugs are cleared up.
The interface improvements are nice, the overhaul sounds promising, but until it stops crashing its useless.

Damien...

Love the new program. I really want a good, mac like torrent program and this looks like it.

Couple of features would be avoiding packet shaping and the ability to download sections of a file only. So of a folder contains multiple files, you can choose to only download a couple of contents.

Jonathan...

Really nice! I use Xtorrent since 2 month and I absolutely love it! Keep it going.

Jan...

Thanks for Xtorrent I enjoy using and recommending it. It is a great app. It’d be cool though, if Xtorrent would download new versions through itself. The Safari-roundtrip is kind of superfluous :-)

Best,
Jan

Jim...

Simply the best of its kind. I’m very grateful for this application. Thank you.

Prome...

Very nice update!

What about adding site like torrentspy or demonoid into the search site? Could it be fantastic!

Even...

Hi Dave!

This looks very promising – Xtorrent could definately turn out as the ultimate torrent solution for OSX. I’m especially looking forward to the RSS functionality.

I’m hoping very much you will add support for UPNP – not having to configure a router firewall really adds to the experience.

Anyhoo, keep up the good work!

Colin...

Nice work with the folder navigation. Will there be a option to disable downloading certain files?

Keep up the great work!

Jules...

Thanks Dave,

I’m really impressed by this seamingly simple app.
Keep up the work!

Jules

Amanda...

This is the first time I have heard of this – and I must say I am thoroughly impressed! I generally use transmission because of ease but this has blown me away. It is also the first torrent program that I can use without it bogging down my Internet to snail-speed like all the other torrent programs I have used do. This is going to end up being my main torrent program and I cannot wait for future releases! Thank so you much for this awesome program

Carlos...

Wow, I really really love you. This application is extremely unique and I love what you’re doing with it. Thanks a ton!

Paulo...

Fantastic job, Dave. As always. Slim, elegant and very fast.

2 features that would be great see in the final release:

1.) ability to chose individual files (as in a partial download) inside .torrents, and
2.) visualizing the swarm you’re in graphically

And that matrix visual feedback with pixels? VEEERY well-thought design, man!

Mitch...

Wowsers! Found this thru TUAW… been using Azureus (which is somewhat confusing to set up IMHO) and the search capability of this tool is phenom! Would like to see my upload bitrate shown more – maybe in the dock icon below the download rate? At least show it please next to the status bar in the lower left corner, you’re showinig the download rate there and number of active torrents, why not add the upload speed whereever the download rate is shown please.

thomaus...

Wonderful application. You write amazingly interfaced software.

Build 18 still will crash hard when displaying the search results of “Let it Be”. It has to be force quit to stop the program. Something in the results list locks it up.

I don’t know if this was added recently or not, but the way the fragment view icon displays file checking after restarting the program is a visual treat. It almost makes crashing fun.

Max...

Thanks for nice sofware! Clean interface and very usable search/browse/downlod integration.
