I like the new interface, but I’d make the headlines a bit smaller.

Adam...

How about an ’email to’ button in the right click menu?

James...

Newsfire seems to be having issues with the feed from http://www.majornelson.com/

This wasn’t the case before upgrading to 1.3 v46, and is not fixed in v47.

James, that feed works for me.

Dave...

NewsFire is a favourite, but I’d love to see .Mac (or similar) sync-ing. I go between my PowerBook at home and PowerMac at work and would really love to be able to sync and close the PB, get to work and open up NewsFire just the way I left it…

Anthony...

Brilliant as always, David. Can’t wait for the final version. Will definitely pass along links to the BETA to other Mac geeks I know.

One feature request (and am sure you get a ton): Is there any possibility of integrating a Post to Delicious feature? I know that some feed creators are already including links like this in their individual feeds, but having said feature in the reader itself (for any feed item) would be brilliant.

For me, at least, being able to save posts of note for later viewing (even beyond the current flagging feature) is a key aspect of newsreading.

Anthony, NewsFire already supports Cocoalicious. I have no plans to extend it beyond that.

zach...

Dave, just thought i’d point out that if, perhaps, there was a dedicated button for “post to weblog” (i.e. cocoalicious) this feature would see a lot more use, and more people would find this great program even more usefull.
Love your stuff, man! As always, it’s great!

Simon...

When clicking the SnapBack button in an item of a Smart Feed, a 1px line comes up a bit after the title of the Smart Feed. Also, the number of new items seems to be somewhat off-centered (a bit too far to the left), but this seems only to be a problem with single-digit numbers. Other than that, things look good! I especially like the option not to label Groups (which I just discovered – perhaps a somewhat more prominent button is in order?). Also, how about bringing NewsFire more in-line with iTunes and have the names of selected feeds turn white, and go bold, and have that slight shadow?

Anyways, great software; I can’t wait to see the rest of the features implemented.

Simon, because bringing NewsFire “in-line” with iTunes would require taking NewsFire out of line with everything else. The Mac UI has become an inconsistent nightmare.

Dave...

So David, are there any plans to include .Mac-type syncing of NewsFire? I guess I’m just addicted to .Mac really. It’s so great being able to go to any Mac on the planet that runs OS X (preferably Tiger), create an account and have most of my important information at my fingertips in one online sync! And I reckon NewsFire would fit perfectly in that sphere.

davis...

I like the subtly slimmer design. Nice work.

I’m not sure if this was in previous versions: the unread count for a group includes hidden feeds within the group. It probably shouldn’t. (The workaround is to remove the hidden feed from the group.)

Also, it’s still cumbersome to mark the current post as unread. Right-clicking the post only gives the option of flagging. The only alternative is to click the feed that contains the post, scroll around to find the post (not always easy), right click it there, and choose “Mark Item as Unread”.

Pontus...

The thing Simon says about the 1 px line when you click the back button, should however be easy to fix.

The Title field and “toolbar” (the one with “arrange by:”) is just 1 or 2 pixels higher than the items to the left, which looks a little bit strange. I’d make them the same size, or fix it in some other way. It’s nothing important though.

Thanks for making a brilliant app! It looks and feels fantastic!

Michael...

Dave, one request: please don’t take me to the top of the new entries list when new items arrive! :) Can you find another way to let us know that there are new entries?

Steve...

I like the new NewsFire. I’ve just given up on NetNewsWire v2. The Smart Folders take 5-10 minutes to populate each time I download feeds. Furthermore, the Mac’s performance degrades during this period.

However, NewsFire beta 47 still has shortcomings. Simple additions would help. I like to organize feeds and SmartFeeds into Groups. I have many feeds. I cannot select multiple feeds and then drag them into a Group folder. I have to do so one at a time. A real pain. Also, sometimes I want to delete multiple ffeds at once. Same problem, it has to be done one feed at a time. A pain again.

Also, I’d like to be able to define the exipiration time of feeds identified within a SmartFeed. For example, I want to automatically delete all Adverstisements that begin “ADV:”. Currently I must do some manually after each download.

Of course, I’d also like an integrated browser. But I guess one can’t have everything.

Steve...

Oh and I forgot. I’d also like to be able to sort feed stories by Date, Feed and New. The lack of the latter is a pain as New articles may appear intermixed with old articles even when sorted by Date.

Steve...

Last comment. What about archiving articles. I want to ensure that flagged articles are not deleted, even when I select “Delete Items.” In this case, only non-flagged itmes or articles are deleted.

How can I do so?

Keep up the good work …

julian...

NewsFire doesn’t seem to be checking Boing Boing correctly, it reports no items for the rss or atom feeds.

Dave, not any time soon.

David...

More bugs/comments:

– right-click on the feeds doesn’t do anything

– if an article’s published date can’t be parsed, it’s set as (null), and then gets sorted as older than anything else (and effectively disappears from the article list because of this)

– Some feeds giving me trouble with dates: Joel on Software form, The Globe and Mail

– Some feeds that just aren’t updating: Physical Review Letters, Boing boing (as mentioned above), 43 Folders

Dave...

David, ok I guess just copying the .plist will do for the moment (I’ll then turn that into some Applescript practise at some stage. Maybe…)

But I did want to say that I’ve noticed a vast improvement in the speed of Newsfire’s UI, so thanks and kudos for that!

Anthony...

How about the ability to see in list view only the New articles of the feed, without that 75-article-limit. I second .mac syncing – it’s important for power users. Otherwise OK

Adam...

“- Some feeds that just aren’t updating: Physical Review Letters, Boing boing (as mentioned above), 43 Folders”

I’m having the same problem as David. One in particular I noticed that wasn’t updating was MacMinute.

julian...

slashdot too it seems.

RDF feeds like Slashdot are known to not work in v47. This has been fixed in v48, but v48 is not yet releasable.

Chris...

David, your Mac software is wonderfully well-designed and I am a keen subscriber.

One feature that would be useful to me is a way of assigning an “importance” value to feeds. This could then be indicated in the dock icon (the importance value of the most important unread feed item). Perhaps this could be indicated using the colour of the little circle in the dock icon that shows the number of unread items. Hope this feature request makes sense .. keep up the good work

Jon...

I’d like to have the feed URL as a criteria for smart feeds.
