Inquisitor for Leopard

It’s been quite unclear for many months what the status of Inquisitor would be upon the arrival of Mac OS X Leopard. The official word was that extensions like Inquisitor would be banned from the system, and while workarounds began to quickly appear on the scene, a more solid footing was always hoped for. Now that Leopard has shipped, the picture is more clear.

The short story is this… Inquisitor works. The shipping Leopard did not completely remove extensions, it simply has imposed stronger security conditions on them. Because of the new conditions, Inquisitor installations carried over from Mac OS X Tiger will not work. Any Leopard users will need to download and run the newly packaged Inquisitor 3.0 (v49) installer that has been rebuilt to accommodate the new Leopard environment, and after that Inquisitor should work just fine.

So, for now we should be all set. That said, I don’t doubt that Apple will create more headaches for us the next time around.

Installing Inquisitor v49 on my Leopard G5 completely hosed my Safari: it won’t open at all now, even after restarting.

How do I uninstall?

Bob...

Great job on Inquisitor. I would be lost without it as well.

I had the same issues after upgrading Tiger to Leopard, but on my MacBook it worked without any problems.

What fixed it for me was deleting the entire /Library/InputManagers folder and then running the installer. It created the same folder, but when I started Safari it was there YAY!!!!

Robert...

I wish Inquisitor still worked for Camino…

*ducks*

Alan...

YES! it works! It didn’t work initially, but then I tried what “bryans” said to do:

“I just went in and deleted the whole ../InputManagers folder and re-installed the new version and it works perfect.”

thanks for the tip.

Dachaz...

THANK YOU!

It initially didn’t work as I had installed iGlasses before Inquisitor and iGlasses had made the Input Managers folder.
I ran Leopard without Inquisitor for two days and was already freaking out as I totally got used to search engine shortcuts.
I can’t stress enough how happy I am at the moment :)

Cheers, mate!

Daniel...

How can I uninstall it on Leopard? I could not find a way?

Hulk...

I have the same problem as Nils on Leopard. Everything seemed to install but nothing works in Safari. I have installed twice rebooting each time. What am I doing wrong?

JMD...

How do you uninstall Inquisitor ? I have not seen any place where this is documented.
Not that I don’t like Inquisitor, but there may be some situations where uninstalling “add-ons” is necessary.

Nicky...

Thanks so much! It actually worked. I deleted the entire InputManagers folder from my library, emptied the trash, reinstalled ‘Inquisitor’ and, hey presto!

Much obliged!

bug...

Exactly what files are installed by v49? I want to experiment with other search plugins, and I noticed you just pulled the installer/uninstaller, opting for an .mpkg, leaving me guessing…

nodag...

Hi all.

I’m using the latest version of Inquisitor on Safari 3 and Leopard. The tool works fine, however, I now get a strange error during compiling and then running one of my Xcode projects:

Error loading /Library/InputManagers/Inquisitor/Inquisitor.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Inquisitor: dlopen(/Library/InputManagers/Inquisitor/Inquisitor.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Inquisitor, 265): no suitable image found. Did find:
/Library/InputManagers/Inquisitor/Inquisitor.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Inquisitor: GC capability mismatch

Do you have any idea why the heck Inquisitor interferes with my own, completely independent project? I know, this doesn’t make a sense at all, but hey, it’s clearly Inquisitor which is mentioned.

fellow...

Has anyone had Keychain username/passwords fail due to Inquisitor? Safari is a signed application in Leopard, and from this information, access to keychain will be denied:

http://switchersblog.com/2007/11/13/leopard-code-signing-and-keychain-problems.html

Is there any way to use Inquisitor in Leopard?

Eric...

Regarding the ~/Library/InputManagers-Tiger folder issue, I actually had no issues with having a ~/Library/InputManagers folder. (OS X 10.4.11, Safari 3.0.4 523.12 on a MacBook Pro).

The Inquisitor installer, however, removed InputManagers without a warning or a backup. I had other input managers in that folder, all of which were already updated, and the Inquisitor installer deleted them, forcing me to re-install them.

Other than that glitch – what a great tool, David. Well done!

René...

Hi

I just want to tell you, that inquisitor is really great. The only thing I would suggest you is to make it possible to change the source search engine and not only to allow google and yahoo. There are a lot of other search engines!

Thanks again for your great work!!!

Jason...

Hi all!

Further to Dave’s instructions for kick-starting the activation of Inquisitor, you may need to do the following:

sudo chmod -R 755 /Library/InputManagers/

Cheers,
Jason.

Nike...

It didnt work at all untill I did the aforementioned sudo chmod -R 755 /Library/InputManagers/

That seem to do the trick. I would recommend having that command in the installer… I hate doing things with the terminal :)

At least it works and I am Happy

Gabriel...

Man, i absolutely love you (metaphoricaly speaking!). i hope some day apple buys your idea into safari, like they did with cover flow, you deserve it!

Phil...

I love your program but I can’t get safari 3.0.4 to work. I’m trying to uninstall Inquisitor but I can’t. There is no simple way to uninstall. PLEASE provide detailed instructions on how I can remove every trace of inquisitor v49 from my mac. I don’t want to fix it and I don’t want a workaround. I just want to remove the program. I’m running Tiger on a powerpc. Why is there no Uninstall option anymore?

Carl...

Following advice (deleting Input Manager folder from Library and reinstall Inq) Inquisitor works again under leopard but i need to start Safari three times and only after resetting safari, it launches …
Any ideas ?

Adrian...

Installed and using on 10.5 .. wonderful! Thanks :)

bug...

Two things:

1. Try typing “godw”. The apostrophe of “godwin’s law” is represented as “\x27”, which is incompatible with search engines.

2. How come no uninstall?

Munich...

I´m using a german version as well. Its not working after the normal running installation. I don´t know if it a specific problem of the german distribution!?
I´ll wait for a solution on the part of the developer.

Keisuke...

Hi.

I installed Inquisitor in Safari.
Safari came to be over suddenly in approximately 5 seconds when I started Safari. A method of the uninstallation seems to have fitted a former installer, but a thing of now does not have it. Please teach a method to return.

Regards.

Chris...

You should port this to Firefox.

Lieven...

Yeah, it’d be cool if Inquisitor was bought by Apple, but it’d be even cooler if it was incorporated in Camino, just to be ready to move to a more open platform in stead of depending on deprecated features…

Jon...

Hi there,

I’ve just installed v50 and Safari is now hanging on start up. How do I uninstall this!? ANy help would be great!

Jon

Paavels...

is there any way to add some russian search engines to inqusitor?
10X!

xavier...

Can you add a blacklist of response server. Some site are very present in Google like “expert exchange dot com” or “comment ça marche dot net” and I want to systematic not display this site as search result

thanks for this software

badcrumble...

I’d love it if you added a Clear Search History option to the dropdown menu, but I can understand not cluttering up the interface. Great product.

Hilmar...

Greatest app ever. Thnx for the update!

bonaldi...

Why do Amazon links appear first on searches for things like “Nintendo”, “Sony” and “Nikon”? They’re not the first Google hits.

The...

Google US doesn’t work anymore for me… I’m using Google UK right now, which gives me British Results. -_-

I’m running this on Leopard and have the latest version according to Update in the Search panel of Safari preferences. Is this just me, or does Inquisitor need to be updated?

MarkyJ...

Dave,

Since comments are off on your ‘Idealism Lost’ post, I thought I would comment here.

I think it is a shame that people react as badly as they do to developers who just try to make a living. I think the approach you took on the *free* Inquisitor is a fair one that balances the need to make some money without compromising the usability of the tool for the users.

For some reason, people seem to think that all software should be both useful *and* free. These same people have usually never given anything of their own for free. Imagine a baker being expected to give away loaves for free? A car mechanic servicing cars for free? Why are our skills as software engineers expected to be given to the community for free as part of some altruistic cult?

Sure, if you are part of the Evil Empire you have probably gone too far in trying to extract money for nothing, but I certainly don’t expect you are driving around in a Ferrari off the meagre revenues of Inquisitor.

So please don’t be put off by the ranting of a few nuts. The vast (unfortunately silent) majority think you are doing a great job and want to keep using your great products.

I love my NewsFire.

Chonk on, dude.

Shawn...

Dave, thanks for the great products and especially inqusitor. You made it quite clear that the product was ad supported from the beginning and it is extremely useful to use. Don’t get discouraged, keep up the great work and keep it coming. Many of us use all of your products and appreciate your hard work.

Cheers
Shawn

Fredrik...

Don’t let hard words from ignorant people let you down! Inquisitor is great, as is the business model, since the product now reaches more systems without the restraint of cost. Just make it a bit more clear that it is supported by subtle ads.

Dan...

I love it when devs find a way to make a killer app free by using a clever way pay some bills. Kudos to you. The 5% crowd is always the loudest, and we all have to deal with them in every aspect of life. Inquisitor makes Safari. Period. Thank you. And thank you for finding a way to keep it free.

Suave...

I really love this feature on Safari, it has worked wonders for me…
I have to ask one question, since I like to use FireFox, Will there ever be a inquuisitor for FireFox ?

Benjamin...

I first tried out Inquisitor a long time ago and loved it.. A few days ago I stumbled upon it again, and wondered why I ever removed it from my machine.. I quickly installed again, but it only took me a few seconds to figure out what I disliked about it.. I can’t use my up-/down-arrow to go to beginning/end of my string, because they now work for selecting on the Inquisitor-menu.. As much as I love the software, I’m annoyed that I can’t quickly go from one end of a search string to another, and I’ll probably soon have to go without using this otherwise great plugin, as I feel the speed of my workflow is being reduced.. Is there any way you could add an option to only use the mouse or perhaps a modifier-key+arrow to select something on the list?

Thanks!

Joe...

I just wanted to add a note that may help someone else that had the same problem as myself. After going several months without Inquisitor I finally snapped. I tried countless different Firefox plugins and other tools but nothing could replace Inquisitor. Turns out I was a member of the wheel user group which disables all InputManagers. I found this on the TextMate blog but it didn’t click for some reason. Also, changing user groups in Leopard is not as simple as Tiger. Hope this helps.

bartek...

The Inquisitor itself would be a very handy tool. It’s just the yahoo search algorithm which is rather poor. Uninstalling.

jcandali...

I finally figured out why I couldn’t get Inquisitor to work on my computer under Leopard. I had to take my user out of the wheel group and then restart. After that everything worked fine.
