NewsFire for Leopard

So far, Leopard is proving to be a quite reasonable upgrade in terms of not breaking existing software. However, as the days pass, a few issues are making themselves apparent. One problem I’ve encountered is that text shadows do not render consistently between 10.4 and 10.5, meaning that additional work is required to make things look the same between the two systems. I might post more on this later, because I’m reasonably convinced that it’s either a bug or a very strange design decision.

Another problem is that the new “set access for specific services and applications” firewall settings is creating issues by unexpectedly modifying the binary code of apps (by forcing a code signature on the unsuspecting binary). This has created issues for NewsFire as well as other third-party apps. Thus, during these early days I would advise using this setting with caution.

That said, these issues are certainly not insurmountable, and so today I’m releasing NewsFire 1.4 (v70) as a first pass attempt to refine the user experience on Leopard for the rare user experiencing issues.

Jeff...

I was playing around with Xtorrent and “set access for specific services and applications” and it made the application unuseable. Proceed with caution!

Ah, that must explain it. I was using Xtorrent just fine on Leopard, then I enabled the “set access for specific services and applications” setting and it suddenly wouldn’t show the downloads any more. That must have been the problem. I’ll have to try re-downloading and changing that setting when I get home.

That fixed my problem! It’s working fine now.

Now please just make the icon bigger so that it looks good in CoverFlow Finder :)

Inquisitor x (49th) doesn’t work for me on fresh install of leopard, can’t see it in my prefs…

I didn’t realize how much I used this until Leopard install broke it. Delirious to see it working again, sent you $10 and thanks for a VERY helpful extension to Safari.

Steven...

I have two install of leopard, One is a clean install and inquisitor works fine. Te other is an upgrade from tiger where inquisitor will not work no matter how many times I reinstall it.

Newsfire in my leopard (upgrade from tiger) is exhibiting strange behaviors … clicking on feed items does not show them in newsfire anymore.

Just upgraded to Leopard and Newsfire doesn’t work fine. By clicking on the list item, the item summary won’t show up. I have tried v1.4(70).

Inquisitor does not work an ANY of my 5 Leopard installs, upgrades or fresh installs. :(

I installed Leopard as an upgrade and although the Inquisitor Installer says it installed, it didn’t. I can not get Inquisitor to work. Did not realize how very useful this mini app is.

I had a couple requests for some searches to be added. Most importantly I would really like Thesaurus.com, I use it frequently. Second, where’s youtube?

Newsfire in Leopard on both of my machines exhibits the following behavior that was not there in Tiger. When I start it from the Dock, it runs but does not “come to the front.” The menu bar says “newsfire” but I have to click the dock icon a second time to see it…

I live by my NewsFire. Even with RSS in Leopard’s mail now. I don’t want all those articles mixed in my email which I see as requiring a more prompt examination. With NewsFire I can look at the feed updates when I feel like it regardless of my mail activity.

Any chance of a feature to let NewsFire sync via dotMac so I can get another copy for my iMac at home instead of just on my powerbook. It would be great to follow feeds during the day, have it sync then when I look after dinner NewsFire there has just new stuff and same feeds loaded that I had on my powerbook.

I have installed Newsfire 1.4 (v70) and it will still not run properly under Leopard. Anybody else having the same problems or know how to sort it?

Jesse...

Hopefully I will see Newsfire for the iPhone. That would be one sweet program. Seeing I have about 200 news feeds.

Hi there! I was recommending NewsFire to a friend this morning, and was disconcerted to see that there’s no longer a link to a trial version of the software. Have you decided to no longer offer the trial version?

Hey Dave, been using Newsfire for a couple of years now and am loving it! Thanks for creating such a great product. One thing, however, is that since NewsGator has made their RSS clients free to use, I checked them out for the Windows platform. There one and only one feature that I would love to see Newsfire incorporate into the product. Syncing, OPML and read/unread articles. Does this require some additional infrastructure? Of course. Not knowing much about .Mac, could it be used in conjunction with that?

Keep up the great work. Thanks
