Inquisitor 3.0 Beta 2

I’m pleased to announce that Inquisitor 3.0 Beta 2 is now available for testing.

Inquisitor 3.0 Beta 2 provides an enhanced web searching experience by learning from your use of it over time and then tailoring the experience to suit you best. Websites that you’ve visited before are flagged and prioritized and search keywords you’ve used recently show up ahead of the rest. Best of all, your usage history is stored on your computer and yours alone, so unlike services like Google Personalized Search, you don’t need to worry about some corporation watching and recording your every move.

I’m also pleased to note that Inquisitor 3 has now been downloaded 150,000 times since its release 4 weeks ago. Lastly, I’d like to mention that if you think ‘free’ is an undervaluation of this software, there is a donation box to help make up the difference. If Inquisitor has made your life a bit easier, please consider making the box a bit less empty. :)

Hi David,

In a future release, would it be possible to add the possibility to choose which character(s) should be substituted to the space character, when creating a custom shortcut ?

I know some sites that works only when the space character is substituted by a ‘+’ – for instance “Inquisitor+Safari” instead of “Inquisitor%20Safari”

Thanks by advance,

Eric.

Jason...

This looks great! Finally a way to stop hacking the binary to use other search engines.

One thing that would be very useful is a configurable delay before popping up (or at least checking for search results and suggestions). I’ve turned things down as much as I can, but it still is a several second hit when I hit the first letter of a search string. With auto-complete enabled, I have to type slowly to avoid dropping characters.

rado...

wonderful app, but can you enable the search history button? :)

snozle...

Any chance that you will make this work with OmniWeb, it’s based on WebKit and written in Cocoa like Safari; would it be hard to port?

Bouba...

very very nice little add-on!! I can only imagine this working on 10.5 with the new core animation to add even more smoothness to the process!!!

by the way, little bug here, when you open one of the result by pressing enter on the keyboard, it opens the appropriate page, but if you press command-enter (to open it in another tab), it will open google in the next tab…

except from that, perfect!

Dhruv...

Out of curiosity, is Camino support coming back?

Clark...

Best plugin ever! :)

Some questions: How to personalize Inquisitor? Are there preferences somewhere? How to access? And: I want google.at and not goole.com. Is that possible? How could that be changed? And one very very important thing: As soon as I installed Inquisitor I couldn’t look at the last 10 or so last entries – this option is gone with Inquisitior, isn’t it? I miss that very much!

I didn’t find any documention for Inquisitor…

Clark...

Sorry. I found the prefs for Inquisitor.

Only thing missing now is the option of the regular google search in Safari – showing the last 10 or so last entries on clicking the looking glass.

Anthony...

Are there any plans for something that works with FireFox?

Dave...

Great software. I am amazed at how quickly it has integrated into my usage habits.

One feature request however – as with spotlight, can the top result be selected by pressing the command key? this would make your software perfect.

Thanks

Court...

How do I access the preferences? I originally purchased Inquisitor when it wasn’t free.

However with the new version, I can’t figure out how to access the preferences. I’ve used Inquisitor (ironically) to search your blog and all over the internet trying to figure out how to set up preferences in the latest builds.

Please include a read-me, or a simple note when the application is installed on how to access preferences. Or add a support section to your site with the information ;-)

My paid copy is registered under the email address I submitted this comment with. Thank-you.

MultiZ...

I’d like to say that you’ve done a great job programming and designing inquisitor.

Congratulations.

Scott...

LOVE inquisitor – ever since 2.0… any chance you’ll bring this to FireFox Mac?… any chance our Windows brethren would see a native edition for FireFox Win?

itunesmc...

hi

I wanna ask, if it’s possible to use Inquisitor in Omniweb? :)

When yes, what i have to do?

mc

Richard...

I have just downloaded this and tried it out – very impressive. Just one suggestion, however. It would be good to have a toggle so that it was possible to switch between an Inquisitor search and a conventional Google search.

In the meantime I have added Google to the bookmark toolbar.

Dave...

Just dl’d it and love it. Maybe something already exists, but if not, is it possible to provide a shortcut key to get to the field like using Apple L to jump to the URL field of Safari?

Ian...

Agree with the above comment. It is a fabulous piece of software, though. One other thing: I really miss the list of recent searchwords – maybe you could incorporate this for the future (unless I am missing something). Thanks.

Paul...

Works great! I love the speed and the site icon. fantastic work!

However, the button in the search field (the magnifying glass) doesn’t seem to work anymore. I have Acidsearch as well which lets me choose different search engine just by clicking.

Now it’s either Inquisitor or Acidsearch.

Ben...

Richard: if you press the return key as soon as you type something, it will search google straight away (or whatever search site you setup in preferences)

so, in effectiveness, it’s like both of them together

Paul...

Also, pressing arrow key down doesnt select the next item in the droplist. If it isn’t an intended feature then i’ll hope you add it in the future.

FOAD...

try enter ;)

Christian...

Hi, like this program very much and just innstalled the beta have used the other versions before, but I cant find the button where you can make your own search keycombos f.ex. shift+i+m sends you for a search in the internetmoviedatabase, is this taken away from the beta version?

Christian...

ooops, found it now :P it is in the Preferences in Safari, I think that is nicer as well just was used to the button where the thingy comes up :)

James...

Excellent software, can’t believe how many button presses it saves me!
To comment on Richard’s comment: if I want to do a “conventional Google search” I just hit the enter key after typing, am I missing your point?

Daniel...

very cute!

but it takes up to a second to process my keystrokes and when I get hasty it tends to swallow some which makes another slowdown. in that respect 2 was better!

Daniel...

using an mbp core2duo btw, so its not the cpu :)

Brandon...

I’ve been using this for a while (since the first beta), and while it’s awesome (better even than Firefox), I’d like to request a feature.

It would be nice if, for those of us who have a lot of custom search engines (like myself), we could organize our CSE’s into folders, and on mouse over, the folders would spring open and you could select a search engine from within them.

I request this because my list has become too long and is extending all the way into my dock, thus becoming cumbersome and near impossible to use.

Thanks, and keep working on the next beta!

Don...

I just downloaded FireFox 2.0.0.3 and it’s so much faster than Safari I’m considering switching again. Any plans to make Inquisitor Safari friendly?

Anthony...

Hey David,

I don’t know if you’ve read this yet, but Jon Hicks (always a fan of your work, as I am) has posted that Leopard may not allow for InputManagers with Safari. You heard anything on this?

Here’s a link to the post:

Kelmon...

Hi Dave,

It’s a shame but Inquisitor is one of the things that I miss from Safari when I changed to Camino. The 2.6 version of Inquisitor brought the love to Camino and all was well in the world. If you can bring the v3 release back to Camino again then I’d happily send another donation.

Thomas...

Great software. There is one glitch that could do with attention: when typing quickly some letters don’t get recorded.

Jim...

Make this little gem for Firefox and I’ll happily donate… maybe even twice! ;-)

duyvan82...

I’ve sent you an email asking for help with newsfire registration and haven’t heard from you since. I bought newsfire as part of the macheist bundle a while ago but for some reason it just doesn’t want to register now (i’ve got a new mac…) Please reply me asap.

Thomas...

Tryed it today for the first time – good work!
Only one question: can you add an option to change the colors? Grey on black is really hard to read, white on black isn’t much better. Maybe black on white could be a good choice? (as it looks when you type a url and safari gives suggestions)

jim...

Inquisitor 3 seems slow compared to version 2. Am I alone in feeling this way? I have Saft running, but this was never an issue with Inquisiotr 2.

özgür...

we want Turkish language of google search on Inquisitor

Indraunt...

I’ve been using Inquisitor for yonks, and quite frankly its the only thing that keeps me using Safari… So good job there!
However, through using Inquisitor more and more, I find myself using the Address Bar less and less simply because I don’t always know exactly the site I’m after, or maybe the extension; so it generally just makes more sense for me to just use Inquisitor instead.
What I’m wondering is whether it would be possible to tweak Inquisitor to be tied to the Address Bar instead of the Search Bar?
I understand that you may not want to do this yourself, but I would like ot know whether it’d be possible to do.

Adam...

I have been having a problem with the instant results from google, they do not show up. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Bill...

Love, love, love Inquisitor! Great job on the programming and the design.

I recently noticed that web site results are no longer displayed if source is set to Google… works with Yahoo, others. Thought you should know.

Jet...

I’m having some trouble – Inquisitor will no longer show website search results, only suggestions. How do I fix it? I tried to uninstall and install again, bot hasn’t worked. I love this program – it saves me time, no complains beyond this…

david...

i installed inquisitor v.3 but it isn’t working as promised. i don’t know how to accurately describe this… i only get the options to go to a google home page. i am not getting the first third of the inquisitor searches that would take me directly to the website i am trying to get to. i have uninstalled and reinstalled but still the same thing.

iGOOSE...

Any plans to make a Safari 3.0 compatible version of Inquisitor?

Wade...

Well, I love Inquisitor 3 on Safari. However, I use Camino most of the time, and I miss your support for Camino. Do you plan on updating I3 to work on Camino?

Leander...

Hello,
The ‘Search History’ doesn’t work at all (yes, prefs are ok).
Can that be fixed?

thomas040...

REALLY think you should port this to windows, as the new safari is out. That would give windows users a taste of the REAL mac experience…. surprised apple hasnt paid you a large sum and bought it from you… it is essential to me in safari….

mini-d...

I think NewsFire needs a rebump in interface, keeping the small and fast use.

SprintSuks.com...

Is there any way to preserve the inquisitor prefs? Anytime i ditch the crappy safari prefs, i have to RE-enter all the engines/extras/changes i’ve added to inquisitor. that is a major pain in the butt

also it needs som acidsearch features, especially the google ‘search this site:domain.com’ feature

thx
