William...

I agree.

julian...

Pretty, though what is it?

Lachy@kennedia.com...

what the…??

Pat...

hmmm, your new app?

minesweaper? :S

Chad...

Yeah, I agree. That definitely looks Minesweeper-esque.

Manfred...

It could also be a visualization for a calender app that shows where you have free time and where you have overlapping appointments.

Dan...

I wonder if it’s meaningful the image URL refers Dave’s xlife.org domain?

zach...

wha?

Chris...

Is this some sort of Daring Fireball reader?!

Anthony...

….OR it could be a beautiful new defrag tool :-D

Fernando...

Looks like a diagram, the colors indicate the state of each item (available, unavailable, recently updated/used). Also looks like that defragmenting tool on Windows 95 and 98.

Chris...

John Conway’s Game of Life?

eric...

it _does_ look like a defrag tool, doesn’t it? at least i thought that too.

Skylor...

So… let’s put the hints together… star in a circle… plus this… = ?

sean...

The colors are the default calendar colors (home, work, etc.) in iCal… in a monthly calendar view, each day is a square… you usually place a star next to, or on a day of importance in a calendar…

iThink it’s a calendar app.

Leon...

I think bittorrent tool. Obviously bits of files shaded in the Azureus tradition: red is in memory, blue is written, light blue is a requested, white is hasn’t got up to yet.

Bennett...

It looks like a really bizzare crossword puzzle.

Cameron...

I think it’s hilarious how much interest a little image can stir up. Not that DW hasn’t earned it, but it’s still funny.

Jon...

Why would he make a bittorrent tool if he has bt core built into Acquisition?

EnErGy...

Star = supernova, meganova, mininova or something like this? If so, the application would be a Bittorrent client

JulienBDR...

I agree Leon : bittorrent ?

Joel...

Oooh. New app! Quit teasing us David… it’s working!

Jeremy...

If you look at the picture, you’ll see that it’s an 18×18 grid. This means it couldn’t be a calendar app.

Minesweeper has been done to death.

MacOS X has virtually no need for a defragmenter, so it’s unlikely that.

Conway’s Game of Life uses only two/three colours IIRC.

It’s certainly not a screen capture, as a grid of squares is a very inefficient (spacewise) representation of… anything, and Dave is anything but inefficient.

So if anything I’d say it’s an icon for an upcoming app. Though as the linked image is only 99×99 pixels compared to OS X’s max of 128×128, that may not be it either.

Icon for a stand-alone torrent app is my guess. Torrents feel like a second-class citizen in Acquisition, and I can see this causing a certain amount of angst for a perfectionist designer. :-)

MacMelo...

I would love a BitTorrent app… The BT built in Acquisition has problems with a lot of trackers, and as far as I can tell, it just downloads data without sending any…

CraigJ...

Maybe its kinda like spaces… only each open app gets a square so you can jump to them… but then Expose does that… so i don’t know. It might just be a picture for all I know.. lol

I am eagerly awaiting further news on the ‘Teaser’ from before!!!! :)

Brian...

Looks like O&O Defrag.

Olivier...

BT client, for shizzle.

Sam...

I think it’s a new app to help pixel artists – a more specialised, and cheaper version of Adobe Photoshop, which most people use…

Just a guess.

MacMelo...

I would love a BitTorrent app… The BT built in Acquisition has problems with some trackers, and as far as I can tell it just downloads data without uploading…

Charles...

It’s an extreme close up of some part of the new apps icon or ui.

Paul...

Yeah, it’s a BitTorrent app. Has to be. It’s in Dave’s area of knowledge, it’s something he’s already shown an interest in with Acquisition. And the diagram looks just like a file segment status bar, ala Acq, or Azureus.

That would rock if it was. Azureus is nice n’ all, but it just doesn’t have the slickness of Acqusition. Acquisition, I know, does BT, but not amazingly, and doesn’t have enough config options. Hopefully this will be what we’ve been waiting for!

Gavin...

Looking forward to seeing what this is for… can we expect to see it soon?

MacMelo...

Cool… Glad to see it IS a bittorrent app after all… Way to go!!!

Sluggo...

Mmmm, Xtorrent goodness.

Collin...

All I *really* want in a Mac BitTorrent app is the ability to select individual files for download from the overall torrent. That plus a slick Watanabe UI would be perfection :-)

carbo...

Is it the “progress bar of a future bittorrent app ? :P

Harrison...

its from Xtorrent, the new bittorent client. More to come at xtorrentp2p.com

William...

Triple word score!

Matteohickey@gmail.com...

Sneaky, Watanabe…. very sneaky! ;-P

Alberto...

Now I understand…

iQuart...

am, pretty nice.. you could use this as a background for the xTorrent “installer”.. only put a gray instead of white and put the green and red squares you should (then) put transperent.. a bit..
in my opinion its veryvery good.. (simple and good)

ojo...

maybe it is just a picture of some freakin squares. I think william said it best: “I agree.” A picture is just a picture and all you can do is agree with it.
